It was 1993. My entire comicography up to this point consisted of very Garfield-like newspaper comics and a few comic book-sized stories shown almost exclusively to my parents, my friends, and -- on very rare occasions -- the Cypress Falls student body. Recently I started finding my own voice and my own way of doing things, but still was exclusively drawing the kind of comics that, well... I could show to my parents. I probably could have even shown them to my religious uncle and his 11 religious kids as well.
I was about to reach the age of sixteen, and it just seemed to naturally well within me... the urge to try something a little more... mature? And so exported three characters from three different comics I had done, made them a comic book team, and created Asylum, the comic that started me down THAT ROAD. And many roads like it.
It was the first comic to include swearing, blood, and brief nudity, the three big things that let you know this is totally not for little kids or religious uncles. It's also the first comic where I attempted to draw "anime-style" on a regular basis, albeit with only one character. This was also the first comic I attempted to distribute to more than a few people. Like I said, many roads. And that's why I have it online. For anyone who is interested in seeing the starting point that spawned many ridiculous things, here it is. |
